    410 TASTE AND CRITICISM IN ART:
  • History and literature of art criticism demonstrating the varied philosophic, cultural, iconographic, technical, and visual approaches. Prerequisite: 6 credits of art history. (Dr. Rich)
    411 ROMAN ART:
  • Roman sculpture and painting from Augustus to Constantine. Prerequisite: ART H 100, 111, 201, or 311. (Dr. Walters)
    412 THE GOTHIC CATHEDRAL:
  • Specific aspects of Romanesque and Gothic church architecture of western Europe, especially France and England, between 1000 and 1500. Prerequisite: ART H 100, 112, 202, 302, or 312. (Dr. Smith)
    414 ITALIAN BAROQUE PAINTING:
  • Survey of Italian Baroque painting from sixteenth-century proto-Baroque masters to painters of the late Baroque and Rococo periods. Prerequisite: ART H 100, 112, or 304. (Dr. Curran).
    415 THE SKYSCRAPER:
  • Origin and evolution of the skyscraper as seen against the background of cultural conditions and technological factors. Prerequisite: ART H 100, 112, 202, or 307. (Dr. Zabel)
    416 AMERICAN PAINTING 1876-1913:
  • Art in the United States between 1876 and 1913; emergence of an American art and transition to the modern styles. Prerequisite: ART H 100, 112, or 307. (Dr. Mazow)
    420 RUSSIAN ARCHITECTURE:
  • Russian architecture from the first Orthodox churches of the late tenth century to the end of the Soviet Union. Prerequisite: ART H 100, 111, 112, 201, or 202. (Dr. Zabel)
    422 STUDIES IN MEDIEVAL SCULPTURE (39 credits):
  • Specific studies of western European sculpture, 300-1500, with attention to sources, styles, type, and iconography. Prerequisite: ART H 100, 111, 201, 302, or 312. (Dr. Smith)

    432 PROBLEMS IN ICONOLOGY (39 credits):
  • The investigation of content and meaning in major monuments of the history of art. Prerequisite: 6 credits of art history. (Dr. Cutler)

    450 THE HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY:
  • The history of photography from 1839, with particular emphasis on the relationship to the plastic arts. Prerequisite: ART H 100, 112, 202, 305, 307, or 325. (Dr. Locke)
    452 BYZANTINE ART:
  • Monumental and minor arts of Byzantium and related areas from the reign of Justinian to the Turkish conquest of Constantinople. Prerequisite: ART H 100, 111, 201, or 302. (Dr. Cutler)
    454 SPANISH BAROQUE ART:
  • Survey of seventeenth-century Spanish painting and sculpture, with an emphasis on Velázquez, Murillo, Ribera, and Zurbarán. Prerequisite: ART H 100, 112, or 304.
    464 FRENCH BAROQUE PAINTING:
  • Examination of seventeenth-century French painting, including Italian influences; the provincial, Classical, and official styles in France. Prerequisite: ART H 100, 112, or 304.
