Graduate Financial Support
AssistantshipsFor fall semester 2007 and spring semester 2008, the Department of Art History has awarded twenty graduate assistantships to continuing and incoming graduate students. About half of the assistantships are quarter-time assistantships, which require approximately ten hours of work a week. A quarter-time assistantship provides a stipend of at least $7,065 and a full tuition grant-in-aid (tuition waiver) for the two semesters. The other half of the assistantships are half-time assistantships, which require approximately twenty hours of work a week. A half-time assistantship provides a stipend of at least $14,130 and a full tuition grant-in-aid for the two semesters. Graduate assistants typically grade exams and papers in large survey classes, lead discussion sections in an introductory course, work in the Visual Resources Centre, work in the Palmer Museum of Art, or serve as a research assistant for a faculty member. Occasionally, selected Ph.D. candidates are given the opportunity to teach undergraduate courses. In addition to the department’s assistantships, the Palmer Museum of Art has two half-time graduate assistantships that are typically filled by graduate students recommended by the Department of Art History. The University Libraries has one to one half-time graduate assistantship that is sometimes filled by a graduate student in art history. During the summer, two Ph.D. candidates are usually hired to be instructors in undergraduate courses. The department also has approximately four graduate assistant opportunities during the summer. Generally, for M.A. candidates who receive graduate assistantships, the department attempts to provide assistantship support during their two years of study. Normally, for Ph.D. candidates who receive graduate assistantships, the department attempts to provide assistantship support during their first three years of doctoral study, with the possibility of a fourth year. If circumstances warrant, a fifth year of support will be considered for a doctoral candidate. One must reapply annually for an assistantship. Continuation of assistantship support is based upon satisfactory progress toward the respective degree and satisfactory performance of assistantship duties. All applicants who have been admitted will be considered for any available graduate assistantships. |
