Research Grants
Funds (particularly to support research for M.A. theses/papers and Ph.D.
dissertations) are awarded within the department to support research and
travel. The amount and sources of travel grants vary annually. For 2006-07,
eight graduate students were awarded research grants from the department,
totaling $20,566. The sources for the 200708 departmental research funds
included:
- Babcock Galleries Endowed Fund in Art History
- Francis E. Hyslop Memorial Fellowship
- Louise D. Purcell Memorial Art History Endowment
- Susan and Thomas Schwartz Research Grant
- Susan W. and Thomas A. Schwartz Endowed Fellowship for Dissertation Research in Art History
- Art History Donors Travel Grant
- Robert H. Lehmann Fellowship, Renaissance Society of America
- Research Grant, Renaissance Society of America
- Smithsonian Institution Predoctoral Fellowship at the Smithsonian American Art Museum
- Doctoral Fellowship, Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada
- Research Subsidy Grant, Program for Cultural Cooperation between Spain's Ministry of Education,
Culture and Sports and United States Universities at the University of Minnesota
There are also research funds that art history graduate students can compete for with
students from other departments and colleges at Penn State. Art history graduate students
have recently been awarded the following:
- Alumni Association Dissertation Award
- Graduate Student Summer Residency, Institute for the Arts and Humanities
- Waddell Biggart Graduate Fellowship
The Office of the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies of the College of
Arts and Architecture and the Graduate School of the University have also been very generous
in providing additional research funds and travel expenses for graduate students. Students
are also encouraged to apply for external grants and fellowships. In recent years, doctoral
students from Penn State have been awarded the following external grants:
