2007-08 Requirements for the Ph.D. in Art History

Admissions

Applicants must have an M.A. in art history (or a closely related field) with at least a 3.0 grade-point average from an accredited college or university. Applicants must submit an official application plus application fee, official transcripts, GRE scores, the foreign language personal assessment form, three letters of recommendation, a statement of purpose, and a writing sample (Please see how to apply page). Students who have completed their M.A. in art history at Penn State and wish to proceed with doctoral studies here must apply for the Ph.D. program.

The only exception to the above guidelines would be a Penn State master's student who the Graduate Programs Committee has agreed should bypass the master's thesis/paper and move directly into the Ph.D. program. Such a student must complete all other requirements of the M.A. and must apply for entrance into the Ph.D. program as well as for a waiver of the M.A. thesis/paper requirement. The student should be aware that she/he will not receive an M.A. but only the Ph.D. upon successful completion of the doctoral program.
