2007-08 Requirements for the Ph.D. in Art History

Fields of Study for the Comprehensive Examination

Three fields are to be chosen for the examination—one major, two minor. The three fields must be represented by three different members of the department's graduate faculty (see list below). The fields have been organized under major groups (i.e., Medieval). A maximum of two fields may be chosen from any single major group. The three fields must be chosen in consultation with the student's advisor. A student should discuss with each faculty member what the parameters of each field are. A field may be modified by a faculty member with the approval of the graduate officer.

    African:
  • Traditional African Art (Dr. Okeke Agulu)
  • Modern/Contemporary African Art (Dr. Okeke Agulu)
    Asian:
  • Art and Architecture of Southeast Asia (Dr. Desai)
    Ancient:
  • Egyptian Art and Architecture (Dr. Walters)
  • Greek Art and Architecture (Dr. Walters)
  • Roman Art and Architecture (Dr. Walters)
    Late Antique, Early Christian and Byzantine:
  • Late Antique and Early Christian Art and Architecture (Dr. Cutler)
  • Byzantine Art and Architecture (Dr. Cutler)
    Medieval:
  • Early Medieval Art and Architecture (Dr. Smith)
  • Romanesque Art and Architecture (Dr. Smith)
  • Gothic Art and Architecture (Dr. Smith)
    Renaissance:
  • Italian Art and Architecture (Dr. Curran)
  • Northern European Art and Architecture (Dr. Houghton)
    Baroque:
  • Southern European Art and Architecture (Dr. Curran)
  • Flemish and Dutch Art and Architecture (Dr. Houghton)
  • French Art and Architecture (Dr. Houghton)
  • Colonial American Art and Architecture (Dr. Rich or Dr. Zabel)
    Late Eighteenth and Ninetennth Centuries:
  • European Painting and Sculpture (Dr. Locke)
  • Photography (Dr. Locke)
  • American Painting and Sculpture (Dr. Rich)
  • European and American Architecture (Dr. Zabel)
    After 1900
  • European Painting and Sculpture, ca. 1900-1940 (Dr. Locke)
  • American Painting and Sculpture, ca. 1900-1940 (Dr. Rich)
  • Photography (Dr. Locke or Dr. Rich)
  • Art since 1940 (Dr. Rich)
  • Architecture (Dr. Zabel)

Specialized fields with an affiliate graduate faculty member in art history may also be chosen (such as African American art with Dr. Robinson), with the approval of the graduate officer. The affiliate graduate faculty members are Dr. Mazow, Dr. McGrady, Dr. Robinson, and Dr. Wormhoudt.
