Department NewsApril 18, 2008 Christine Butts, received the Staff Award for Outstanding Service from the College of Arts & Architecture. She is administrative assistant to the Head of the Department of Art History, a position she has held since 2002. She has been at Penn State since 1992, first working the College of Agricultural Sciences and t hen in the Smeal College of Business. In supervising a departmental office, Chris plays a key role in assisting all undergraduates, graduate students, staff, and faculty. She is the staff liaison for undergraduate faculty advisors and has become the department expert on the minutiae and procedures dealing with graduation requirements for majors and minors. She has eased the transition of many majors and minors, as well as graduate students, as they enter into our department. As the primary assistant to the Graduate Officer and the key staff source for graduate students within the department about the university's policies, Chris is highly effective and has a great depth of knowledge about the graduate program. When faculty members are having "mini-crises," it is Chris who usually finds reasonable solutions to the problem and saves the day. One of the first human contacts that many have with our department is Chris. She has an extraordinarily welcoming and informative manner when dealing with people communicating with our department. Chris has devoted significant time to service within the College of Arts & Architecture, having served as Chair of the Staff Professional Development Support Committee during 2004-05, and as Chair of the College's Staff Advisory Council in 2005-06. Last year she served on the search committee for the new Dean of the College of Arts & Architecture. Chris holds an associate degree in business administration from Penn State. * * * April 3, 2008 The following was just published by Dr. Sarah K. Rich, associate professor
