CL, no. 1262 (May 2008): 322-25. Dr. Anthony Cutler May 2008 Dr. Anthony Cutler, Evan Pugh Professor of Art History has been elected University of Oxford Senior Research Associate. Olubukola A. Gbadegesin April 2008 Olubukola A. Gbadegesin, Visiting Instructor of Art History, has been awarded a two-year (2008-10) Carter G. Woodson Pre-Doctoral Fellowship in the Carter G. Woodson Institute for Afro-African and African Studies at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. This will allow her to complete her Ph.D. dissertation (Emory University) on "Picturing the Modern: Politics, Identity and Self-fashioning in Lagos, Nigeria, 1861-1944," which explores the emergence of portrait painting and studio photography in Nigeria. Dr. Anthony Cutler March 2008 Dr. Anthony Cutler, Evan Pugh Professor of Art History, has been elected as Senior Research Associate of the Khalili Research Centre for the Art & Material Culture of the Middle East, University of Oxford, England, Hilary and Trinity Terms, spring 2009. While at Oxford, Professor Cutler will also be an associate of the Sub-Faculty of Near and Middle Eastern Studies. He is currently working on his book, The Empire of Things: Gifts and Gift Exchange Between Byzantium, the Islamic World, and Beyond. Rich March 2008 Dr. Sarah K. Rich, Assosciate Professor of Art History, published an exhibition review of "Be-Bomb," Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona, in Artforum (March 2008): pp. 350-352. Dr. Elizabeth J. Walters March 2008 Dr. Elizabeth J. Walters, Assosciate Professor of Art History, will be presenting a paper, "New Findings from the Early Dynastic Period from Temple-Town Hierakonpolis," at the X International Congress of Egyptologists on Rhodes, Greece, May 22-29, 2008. Dr. Madhuri Desai February 2008 Dr. Madhuri Desai, Assistant Professor of Art History, will be presenting a paper, "'Hindu' Historic Preservation: Religious Mythology and the Riverfront at Banaras," at the Annual Meeting of the Society of Architectural Historians, Cincinnati, Ohio, April 23-27, 2008. At this conference, Dr. Desai will also be co-chairing a session on "Colonial Frames/Nationalist Histories." Dr. Elizabeth B. Smith January 2008 Dr. Elizabeth B. Smith, Associate Professor of Art History, will be presenting a paper, "The Attraction of Opposites: Mendicant Architecture and its Use of Cistercian Models," at the Sewanee Medieval Colloquium to be held at The University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee, April 11-12, 2008 Dr. Anthony Cutler November 2007 Dr. Anthony Cutler, Evan Pugh Professor of Art History, presented a paper, "Problems of Hybridity: Crafting and Using the Siculo-Arab Ivories," in the session Islamic and Italian Art: Creating Shared Histories, at the Annual Conference of the College Art Association, Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas, February 20-23, 2008. Dr. Sarah K. Rich February 2008 Dr. Sarah K. Rich, Associate Professor of Art History, presented "Kenneth Noland and the Secret of Painting," at the Colloquium in Visual Culture, Bryn Mawr College, February 6, 2008. Dr. Anthony Cutler October 2007 Dr. Anthony Cutler, Evan Pugh Professor of Art History, was elected the vice-president of the U.S. National Committee for Byzantine Studies (a 5-year appointment). Dr. Nancy Locke September 2007 Dr. Nancy Locke, Associate Professor of Art History, was the Discussant for the panel "The Self Within: Art between Mesmer and Freud" at the Annual Conference of the College Art Association, Dallas, Texas, February 20-23, 2008. Dr. Elizabeth J. Walters December 2007 Dr. Elizabeth J. Walters, Associate Professor of Art History, with Shelton S. Alexander, Recap Cakir, Amr El Gohary and Felicia E. Nelson, presented a paper on "Important New Archaeological Finds at the Hierakonpolis Temple-Town Site Based on Shallow Seismic Anomalies, at the Third International Conference on the Geology of the Tethys, to be held at South Valley University, Aswan, Egypt, January 8-11, 2008. Randy J. Ploog October 2007 Dr. Randy J. Ploog, Affiliate Assistant Professor of Art History and Coordinator of International Programs in the College of Arts & Architecture, presented a paper, "A New Others: The Correspondence between William Carlos Williams and Mitchell Dawson," at the Modern Language Association Annual Convention in Chicago, December 27-30, 2007. Dr. Brian A. Curran September 2007 Dr. Brian A. Curran, Associate Professor of Art History, presented a paper, "The Lions in the Piazza: A Tale of Two Statues," at the Southeastern College Art Conference in Charleston, West Virginia, October 17-20, 2007. Dr. Brian A. Curran September 2007 Dr. Brian A. Curran, Associate Professor of Art History, presented a paper, "The Bull, the Column, the Scepter, and the Crown: Hierogyphs of Nobility in the Missal of Cardinal Pompeo Colonna," at the 34th Annual Saint Louis Conference on Manuscript Studies at the Knights of Columbus Vatican Film Library at St. Louis University, St. Louis, Missouri, October 12-13, 2007. Dr. Chika Okeke-Agulu September 2007 Dr. Chika Okeke-Agulu, Assistant Professor of Art History at Penn State and Robert Sterling Clarking Visiting Professor at Williams College, presented the 2007 Robert Sterling Clark Visiting Professor Lecture, "Dissecting the Rainbow Nation: The Photomontage of Candice Breitz," on September 25, 2007, at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, Massachusetts. He will be curating the show --sponsored by the Bundespräsidialamt -- with Dr. Britta Schmitz, Senior Curator at the Hamburger Bahnhof. Dr. Chika Okeke-Agulu August 2007 Dr. Chika Okeke-Agulu, Assistant Professor of Art History, has been selected to be the Robert Sterling Clark Visiting Professor at Willliam College, Williamstown, Massachusetts, for fall 2007. During Spring 2008, he has been awarded The Clark Fellowship at the Robert and Francine Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, Massachusetts. |
