Christopher Frassinelli Memorial Scholarships For Summer Study in Todi, Italy

Christopher Frassinelli Memorial Scholarships will be awarded on an annual basis to two undergraduate art history majors who have been accepted into Penn State’s study abroad program in Todi, Italy, for the coming summer. One scholarship will be presented for academic merit and the other for financial need. Each scholarship provides $500 to help cover the costs of participating in this program.

Christopher Frassinelli (1978-2002) was a senior art history major when he was selected to participate in the Todi program during the summer of 2002. Chris transferred from architecture to art history, and he felt he had found the right academic home. He was eager to extend his knowledge of art history by applying to the summer program in Todi, which is sponsored by the Department of Art History, the School of Visual Arts, and the Department of Spanish, Italian & Portuguese. Chris’s ethnic background was Italian-American, which made it all the more important for him to travel to Italy for the first time. Chris made the most of the summer by creating some exciting drawings, studying Italian, and making a study of the Todi church of Sta. Maria della Consolazione, which he presented to the class. He was an energizing force among his fellow students, and made a couple of independent trips to Rome with several of them. Chris loved his Italian host family, and was especially close to their two young teenage sons. He was eager to finish his degree upon returning to Penn State in the fall, and planned to travel to Italy in the future to live and work. Tragically, Chris died in the fall of that year as the result of a car accident. His B.A. in art history was awarded posthumously. The Todi program faculty worked to establish a memorial scholarship in Chris Frassinelli’s name in partnership with Chris’s family, to help other art history majors attend the Todi program.
