Education
Ph.D. in the history of architecture and urbanism (Cornell University)
M.A. in architectural history (University of Virginia)
B.A. in art history and archaeological studies (Yale University)

Dr. Farris is a visiting faculty member at Penn State for 2006-07 and teaches courses on Asian (particularly East Asian) art, architecture, landscape design, and urbanism. Previously, he taught for two years at Washington University in Saint Louis. His current work focuses on the impact of foreigners on the architecture and urban fabric of the city of Guangzhou (also known as Canton), China, from the 18th to the 20th centuries. His article, “Thirteen Factories of Canton: An Architecture of Sino-Western Collaboration and Confrontation,” will appear in the 2007 edition of the journal, Perspectives in Vernacular Architecture. Farris is currently working on a book entitled Dwelling on the Edge of Empires: Foreigners, Architecture, and Canton, China. He has also written book reviews for the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians and the Vernacular Architecture Newsletter. Besides the architecture and urbanism of modern East Asia, Dr. Farris's research interests include Asian gardens and landscape design, East Asian folk dwellings, East/West cross-cultural influences in the arts, art and imperialism/colonialism, the history of photography in Asia, and popular prints and commercial graphic design in 19th and early 20th century China. Dr. Farris has also had significant experience in the fields of historic preservation, early American architecture and decorative arts, and historical archaeology.
